Vienna, Wiener Staatsoper, 1962. A fascinating, remarkably complete collection of programs, playbills, and ticket stubs for performances during the 1961 and 1962 spring season at the Staatsoper in Vienna, then under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. For each of 25 performances, the archive retains the 4- or 6-page playbill (listing the evening's cast members and a précis of each act) and the pink, orange, or yellow ticket stub, in addition to four 54-page biweekly programs (dated May 16, June 1 and 16, 1961 and May 31, 1962), detailing each opera being performed during that two week period. A superb survival, each component of the archive in virtually pristine condition. Our indefatigable aficionado attended 19 performance during the close of May and through June of 1961: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (May 27), Ein Maskenball (May 28), Oedipus der Tyrann (May 29), Don Carlos (June 2), Wozzeck (June 3), Tristan und Isolde (June 4), Aida (June 5), Capriccio (June 6), Das Rheingold (June 7), Eugen Onegin (June 8), Die Walküre (June 9), Don Giovanni (June 10), Siegfried (June 11), Götterdämmerung (June 13), Die Fledermaus (June 14), Die Hochzeit des Figaro (June 15), Electra (June 20), Turandot (June 22), and Der Rosenkavalier (June 23). Perhaps exhausted (or short of funds) the following year, he or she made do with only six performances: Die Hochzeit des Figaro (June 2), Ariadne auf Naxos (June 4), Don Carlos (June 5), Götterdämmerung (June 6), Arabella (June 11), and Così fan tutte (June 14). The Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper), one of the leading opera houses in the world, is a 1,709-seat Renaissance Revival theater built from 1861 to 1869 as the first major building on the Vienna Ring Road, after plans by August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll and designs by Josef Hlávka. Interestingly, on June 4, 1961, the day on which Tristan und Isolde was performed, with Wolfgang Windgassen and Martha Mödl in the leading roles, President John F. Kennedy of the United States and Premier Nikita Khrushchev of the Soviet Union held a summit meeting in Vienna, just blocks from the opera house. N. B. BETTS, John (fl. 1827-1855), [Cartographic Game] Betts's Tour Through Europe
BETTS, John (fl. 1827-1855)
[Cartographic Game] Betts's Tour Through Europe
London / Liverpool, George Philip & Son / Philip, Son & Nephew, 1880. Rare colored lithographed map of Europe (620 x 691mm), with route to be followed when played as a game. Backed with linen and dissected into 24 sections for folding (as issued) into original case binding of machine-stamped blue cloth covers with elaborately decorated oval paper title label printed in black. At bottom is a comparative chart depicting the relative heights of mountains in various countries, with numbered "Reference to the Mountains" in upper right corner giving elevations of peaks. An excellent example, securely bound, with map coloring fresh and bright. Worldcat Discovery lists only three holdings, all in the United States. Hannas (English Jigsaw Puzzle), p. 85. There are 104 stops on the tour, each a city or town, leading players from London across the channel to Calais and eventually back to London by way of Spain, Italy, Austria, Turkey, Russia, and Iceland. John Betts was a publisher of cartographic games and educational puzzles, maps, atlases, and folding globes, whose premises were at 7 Compton Street, Brunswick Square, from 1839-1846, and then at 115 Strand. George Philip & Son, Ltd. published Betts's folding globes until the 1920s. N. B. BONNE, Rigobert (1727-1794)
[Poland] [Napoleonic Wars] Theatre de la Guerre Actuelle, Comprenant : La Prusse, la Pologne, Une Grande Partie de la Russie, & de la Turquie Européenne Et Asiatique Jusqu'à la Mer Caspienne
A Paris, Treuttel & Würtz, rue de Lille, No. 17, 1807. Uncommon early nineteenth-century map (700 x 975mm), with contemporary hand coloring, of Poland and adjoining territories during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. Original copperplate engraving printed from 9 plates, then segment and laid down on blue linen with manuscript paper title label. Third State, with borders showing divisions after the Third Partition (private communication with Jakub Jakimiak of Antykwariat Kosmos, Warsaw). An excellent, richly colored example (some margins trimmed with loss of several letters), but a rare survival. The Third Partition of Poland, in 1795, was the final in a series (following those in 1773 and 1792), progressively reducing Poland's territories until, after the third partition, the state of Poland ceased to exist for the next 123 years. The occupying powers (Russia, Prussia, and Austria) forced many Polish politicians, intellectuals, and revolutionaries to emigrate across Europe, many of whom served France in Napoleon's armies. Poland briefly regained semiautonomy in 1807 (about the time this state of the map was published) when Napoleon created the Duchy of Warsaw out of the central provinces of Prussian Poland. Rigobert Bonne succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin in 1773 as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine, after which he compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. His work represents an important step in the evolution of cartography, away from the decorative aesthetic of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries toward a more detail oriented, practical bent. Treuttel & Würtz was founded in Strasbourg in 1770s and moved to Paris, while keeping shop in Strasbourg, about 1798. It was established at rue de Lille by 1804, setting an approximate date for this map. (See Giles Barber, "Treuttel and Würtz: Some Aspects of the Importation of Books from France, c. 1825," The Library, Vol. s5-XXIII, Issue 2 (June 1968), pp. 118-144) N. B. [Shakespeare] [Stephen Kemble] Hamlet in Scotland. A Large Manager in a Great Character
London, Robert Dighton, 1794. Hand-Colored (300 x 234mm) print of Stephen Kemble in the role of Hamlet, drawn and etched by Robert Dighton and signed by Kemble in red ink, lower right. "The enormously fat Stephen Kemble, as Hamlet, gesticulates, right arm extended, left arm thrown back, fingers (very large) pointing awkwardly; his head is turned in profile to the left. Dorothy George, Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum, VII, 1942) An excellent example, with wide margins and superb color, bright and fresh. BM1935,0522.17.3. George Stephen Kemble (1758-1822) was a theater manager, actor, and writer, and a member of the famous Kemble family (his sister was the actress Sarah Siddons). GILLRAY, James, 1756-1815 [after], [Caricature] Effusions of a Pot of Porter,—or—Ministerial Conjurations for Supporting the War
GILLRAY, James, 1756-1815 [after]
[Caricature] Effusions of a Pot of Porter,—or—Ministerial Conjurations for Supporting the War
n.p. n.d. A reduced early nineteenth-century copy of BM Satires 9430, lampooning the abnormally bad weather of 1799 and the rising cost of the Napoleonic war. Etching and aquatint on laid paper with original hand coloring: Image: 205 x 165mm; Plate: 222 x 178mm; Sheet: 243 x 191mm. Vertical and horizontal folds as issued, but an excellent impression with rich coloring. BM Satires VII. Gillray Observed, pp. Originally published November 29, 1799, by Hannah Humphrey, 27, St. James's Street. This copy of from volume 5 of London und Paris (Weimar, 1800), the rare satirical journal reprinting reduced copies, mostly unsigned, of English and French caricatures. In the print, a large frothing tankard stands on a cask whose head forms the base of the design. From the froth Pitt emerges as Death on the White Horse, giving the effect of a fantastic equestrian statue on a high pedestal. Pitt is in back view; in his right hand is a flaming sword, his left arm is raised; he turns his head slightly to the right, his right leg is extended; he wears his ordinary dress with heavily spurred top-boots. His head is the center of rays on which his orders are inscribed: "Bella! Horrida Bella!" On the left are heavy clouds about to cover the sun; rays to the left are inscribed: "Sun get thee to Bed! Myself will Light ye World' and 'Ho Rains! - Deluges! - Drown the Harvest!" Slanting rain descends in torrents from the clouds, battering down heads of wheat and obscuring a cottage in the background. On the right are the winds: four cherubs' heads blowing violent blasts in every direction, two of which are filled with swarms of insects. Rays to the right are inscribed: "Pestiferous Winds! blast the fruits of the Earth!" and "Ho! Flies! Grubs, Caterpillars! destroy the Hops!" The blasts strike hops twined round poles on the right of the design. On the tankard is a large '4' within a circle inscribed 'Pro-Bono-Ministero', and a small 'WP' with the Pitt crest of stork and anchor. On the cask a long lighted pipe inscribed "Bellendenus" lies across a paper of tobacco inscribed : "Ruin upon Ruin, or an Essay on the Ways & Means for supporting the cursed War."The title continues: "as lately discover'd by Dr P-----r, in the Froth & Fumes of his favorite Beverage." KAUFFER, E. McKnight (Edward), 1890-1954; HUXLEY, Aldous [Introduces]
[Exhibition Catalog] Posters by E. Mcknight Kauffer
New York, The Museum of Modern Art, 1937. First Printing. Card Covers. One of 2,750 copies printed by the Spiral Press, with notes by Kauffer on technique and foreword by Aldous Huxley, of this catalog for an exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art from February 10 to March 7, 1937. Royal 8vo (254 x 191mm): 24pp, including 12 highlights, on 9 black-and-white plates, from the exhibit of 85 posters designed by Kauffer for London Underground, Great Western Railways, Shell, and other English clients. Stapled illustrated card covers screen-printed in French blue, black, and grey. About Fine, with minute wear to lower front cover edge, else virtually pristine. Scarce. Kauffer moved to London at the start of the First World War, and is probably best remembered for the 140 posters he created for London Underground (later London Transport), in many styles showing influences of futurism, cubism, and vorticism as well as impressionism and Japanese woodcuts. Why Huxley was chosen to contribute the very brief, rather incoherent forward (Kauffer painted Huxley's garden in Aix-en-Provence the year before this exhibition) would be interesting to know. N. B.
